When Coaching Does Not Work

Episode 132 - Engaging a Career Coach Is Considered by Many Professionals a Difficult Decision to Make

Episode 132 - Engaging a career coach is considered by many professionals a difficult decision to make

Engaging a career coach is considered by many professionals a difficult decision to make. They can't be sure of the results, and the investment is substantial, especially if you're between jobs and not earning a paycheck. It seems counterintuitive to spend money at the precise time when you need to be saving it.

For me, working with a coach was always a no-brainer. I knew what I didn't know, and I was hungry to advance faster in my career. At every opportunity, I signed up, enrolled, and paid for either professional development or career development throughout my corporate career.

Now, I am a coach. I've developed services and coaching programs that I believe are within reach of my target audience: professionals working in the corporate, public, or nonprofit sectors who want to advance in their careers with confidence and knowledge of how promotion and job hunting work.

But working with a coach is not for everyone or every job search. If you’re contemplating signing up with a coach but are unsure if it will work for you, this episode may help you decide.

11 reasons why you don’t need a coach

In this episode, I will explain each of the reasons below in more detail, so you can decide if coaching will be beneficial for you or you can do without it.

  1. You know precisely what you want to do next in your career.

  2. You have done many successful job transitions in your career.

  3. You have a strong and supportive professional network.

  4. Your resume and overall job application are converting to job interviews for the jobs you want.

  5. You regularly update your resume, and it is ATS compliant.

  6. You’re comfortable on video and have experience in direct-to-camera video interviewing.

  7. You are happy where you are, job-wise and career-wise.

  8. You have a crisp pitch you’ve worked on and tested successfully.

  9. You had job interviews recently and landed jobs that were great for you.

  10. You consistently make it to the first and second stages of interviewing and believe it’s just a matter of time before you get an offer.

  11. You have been moving up in your career and achieving the goals you set out for yourself.

5 reasons why you need a coach, but it may not work for you. At least not yet

And here are the reasons why you quite possibly need career coaching, but maybe there are other things you need to sort out first before engaging a coach:

  1. You have a very intense job and high responsibilities - including NDAs - and you may only be able to job hunt when you leave your current employment.

  2. You can't find the time: You are so busy you have no time to invest in your career.

  3. You are having personal problems that affect your ability to commit to coaching and job searching.

  4. You may need other types of support mechanisms before engaging in career coaching.

  5. You don’t like being coached.
